The data is undeniable: the planet is urgently calling for change. Natural disasters, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events have become increasingly frequent. According to a report released in December 2023 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the global average surface temperature last year was 1.4°C above the 1850/1900 average, making it the hottest in the last 174 years.
In this global context of climate change, the energy sector plays a crucial role. On one hand, it is one of the largest offenders in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. On the other hand, the use of renewable sources for energy generation represents the opportunity for a more sustainable future, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Brazil is a country with extremely favorable conditions for the production of renewable energy – it ranks second among the cleanest producers, with 82.2% of its energy produced from renewable sources. In terms of biogas production, Brazil also stands out. With this resource, we can increase energy generation by utilizing organic waste that is currently wasted and naturally emits methane into the atmosphere.
According to Abiogás (Brazilian Association of Biogas), the potential for biogas production in Brazil, considering landfills as the sole source, is 3.5 billion Nm³/year. In biometane production, Brazil is also in the spotlight.
This biofuel plays a key role in the decarbonization of the energy matrix, as its carbon emissions are practically zero. According to the International Energy Agency, the country is expected to become the fifth largest global producer of biometane by 2027.
